Live Spatial Audio: A 34-Channel Performance with the Compositor V9

Live Spatial Audio: A 34-Channel Performance with the Compositor V9

Step into a world where sound has a physical presence and a navigable space. My latest and most ambitious project is a live electronic performance built around a custom-built Max for Live “Compositor V9” device, routing audio through 34 independent output channels.

This isn’t just a concert; it’s an architectural sound experience.

The Instrument: Beyond Stereo

Traditional electronic music is confined to the stereo field (Left and Right). My setup shatters this limitation. The Compositor V9 acts as a central command hub and a “radar” for sound, allowing me to place, move, and manipulate individual elements across a vast array of speakers.

  • 34 Individual Channels: Each channel is a unique lane for a specific sound—a drum hit, a synth melody, a texture, or a field recording.
  • Dedicated “Radar” Output: A core element of the performance is a dedicated channel for a central, pulsating “radar” sound that scans the space, creating a hypnotic and immersive core.
  • A Universe of Sound: Every sonic element in my “world” of pre-prepared instruments and samples has its own designated output. This creates a previously impossible level of clarity, depth, and spatial movement in a live context.

The Performance: Composing in Real-Time

This system overcomes a major limitation of standard Ableton Live setups. Instead of being confined to a cramped digital workspace, I have a vast, physical canvas for my performance. I am not just playing back tracks; I am actively composing the spatial environment in real-time.

I sculpt the sonic landscape around the audience, sending rhythms on intersecting trajectories, surrounding listeners with ambient textures, and creating a dynamic, three-dimensional audio sculpture that is unique to every show.

Booking Information & Requirements

This performance is designed for venues and festivals that value innovative audio technology and immersive audience experiences.

Technical Rider:

  • Audio Interface: A compatible audio interface with at least 34 discrete outputs (e.g., MOTU, RME, or multiple synchronized interfaces).
  • PA System: A sound system capable of multi-channel spatial audio reproduction. The ideal setup is a ring or surround configuration, allowing the audience to be inside the sound.
  • Stage Setup: A dedicated performance area with a table for my equipment.

My Hospitality Rider is simple:
I believe the focus should be on the art and the audience. Provide me with cookies and a good atmosphere, and I will provide an unforgettable sonic journey.

If you are interested in hosting a unique live performance with the Compositor V9, please invite me. Let’s create a powerful and immersive experience together.
